Continue the Federal Unemployment Insurance Programs

Millions of America’s unemployed job-seekers will be cut off from federal jobless benefits unless Congress takes urgent action to reauthorize the benefit programs through 2011.  Those benefits have helped keep more than 9 million jobless workers and their families going this year alone, while they look for work in a tough economy.  But the obstruction of a bill to reauthorize the programs for a full year before their expiration Nov. 30 means that 800,000 will lose federal unemployment benefits immediately -- 2 million total by the end of December, 4 million by the end of February.

The nearly 5 million Americans who have been struggling to find jobs for six months or more and have been relying on these federal unemployment benefits now will start to lose access to these benefits.  Another 2 million recently unemployed and yet-to-be laid off workers will also not have access to the federal benefits in 2011 unless Congress reauthorizes the program for a full year.

Renewing the federal Emergency Unemployment Compensation (EUC) and Extended Benefits (EB) programs is essential to helping jobless workers support their families while they continue their job searches -- especially now during the holiday season.  And economists agree that unemployment benefits are critical to supporting local jobs in our communities as they strive to recover from the worst downturn since the 1930s.

To Members of the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate:

Your action is urgently needed to reauthorize the federal unemployment insurance programs for a full-year.  These benefits have a significant, positive impact, not only helping millions of job-seekers in a tough economy, but also providing support for communities striving to achieve a sustained economic recovery.

Congress must have as its first priority the immediate renewal and continuation of the full federal unemployment benefits programs through 2011.  This holiday season, don't turn your backs on America's unemployed workers and their families!

Signed,
