![]() April 16th Action Alert April 14, 2008 Good Friends – There are now over 3,000 workers who have joined UnemployedWorkers.org to make the case to Congress and the President that now is the time extend jobless benefits for millions of hard-working families! Thank you all so much for your efforts, and please keep spreading the word. We are writing you now because the House of Representatives made real progress last week on a bill that would extend jobless benefits. The bill, which passed an important Committee on April 16th, would provide 13 weeks of federal extended benefits to all states and another 13 weeks to (or 26 total) to those states, like Michigan, that have an unemployment rate above 6 percent. We need your help now to make sure that there’s serious bi-partisan support for the bill from your Congressman before the vote on April 16th! The bill, which is called the Emergency Extended Unemployment Compensation Act (H.R. 5749), is sponsored by Congressman Jim McDermott, a Democrat from Washington State, and Congressman Phil English, a Republican from Pennsylvania. In addition to several more Democrats (Congressman Rangel, Lewis, Levin, Berkley, Tubs Jones, and Starks), several more Republicans are also co-sponsoring the bill (Congressman Porter, Miller, Young and McCotter). The more Republican bi-partisan support for the bill, the more likely it will pass Congress and get signed into law by the President. So, we need you help right away to get calls into your Congressmen (and from your family, friends and co-workers as well!) telling them this simple message: “Congressman [insert name], more than 3 million workers will run out of their jobless benefits this year if Congress does not immediately extend federal jobless benefits. A a bi-partisan bill, called H.R. 5749, recently passed the Ways and Means Committee. For all the workers in [insert state], please co-sponsor H.R. 5749, and help pass this legislation right away. Thank you.” To find out who your Congressman is and how to reach him or her in Washington, D.C., just click on the following link: Your help and support is critical to making an extension of jobless benefits a reality! Thank you. Best wishes, National Employment Law Project
